On Thursday 8 October Lancashire County Council held its first Lancashire Volunteering Day, part of its Our Lancashire civic pride programme. Skelmersdale was one of four areas taking part, alongside Lancaster, Rossendale and the Fylde.
Cllr Ella Worthington, county councillor for Skelmersdale West, borough councillor for Old Skelmersdale and the county council’s Cabinet Member for Civic Pride, joined the session at Helmsdale. Volunteers worked on the playground and benches, litter picked, and did planting and wildlife work.
“I had such a great time getting stuck in, and it was brilliant to see what we had achieved by the end of the day,” she said.
“Volunteers do amazing work across Lancashire, and we wanted the first Lancashire Volunteering Day to celebrate their contribution throughout the year.”
The day is part of the civic pride work Ella leads at County Hall. In her words, it “is all about bringing people together and encouraging everyone to do their bit for their community. It was wonderful to see people of all ages and from all walks of life getting involved.”
Thank you to everyone in Skem who turned out. If your group would like to take part next time, get in touch with your Reform councillors.
